“If you kill a cockroach, you are a hero, if you kill a butterfly, you are bad. Morality has aesthetic standards.”
Friedrich Nietzsche

I look out the window from my 11th floor glass office and see a protest, thousands of people marching and making lots of noise. I think to myself, oh no another protest and I turn back to my PC and continue working. It then hits me, I have been living in the political and corporate Brussels Bubble for so long that I became somewhat desensitized to protests, and marches because I see them so often that it became my reality. Since I live in Brussels, seeing a protest is just another business day.
Then I start talking to people from outside the “bubble” and they ask me questions about a protest on the news and sometimes I have no clue because there are so many, I lost track. This is my reality, a reality where people are shouting out loud their pains and I don’t always hear them. I don’t hear them because I am constantly surrounded by people shouting, fighting for a cause, doing politics, lobbying, protecting their interests …so I am here amongst them, yet I don’t always “hear or see” them.
There is no doubt that many of them are fighting for a good cause, but in a world that won’t stop shouting and fighting it is hard to hear anything because there is just so much noise.
The noise of breaking news, noise of social media, noise of the corporate machinery, noise or wars, noise of capitalism, the noise of the matrix, the noise of pollution, the noise of deforestation, the noise of children dying in war, the noise of genders fighting for equality, the noise of politicians feeding their egos, the noise of the loneliness pandemic, the noise of poverty and hunger, the noise of the planet suffering. That is the reality we are living in.
So here I stand in my “ivory” tower and look out my window, hear the noise and I continue with my work because this is simply reality. So, I wonder what next? Where are we going as a society and where am I going as an individual human being…
The planet is suffering, we are suffering!
So, what to do about it? There are ways to go about changing things, but I am looking at it at global scale... Some people choose violence, some people choose peaceful protests, and some choose to live in blissful ignorance.
What do I choose? I choose LOVE.

I choose love, patience, compassion, and kindness. I often asked myself how I contribute to the bigger picture. Many times, I did charity work, fundraised, got a job that would allow me to help the population at large, helped random people etc. because I felt part of me had to give back.
More recently I asked myself, ok but what else…and the more I walked on the path of self-development and spirituality I realized that by working on myself by raising my own vibration I am creating a ripple effect in the consciousness of the planet.
One of my inspirations for this realization was Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, a Tibetan monk. He said that when we meditate, we create a ripple effect on those around us. We don’t just meditate for ourselves; we can set the intention to meditate for the benefit of those around us. It’s been a while now that I practice tonglen meditation, which is a wonderful practice of compassion, for myself, my close ones, my community and the world at large. Through this meditation you learn to inhale pain and exhale love and compassion.
Sure, it may sound abstract if you don’t practice meditation, but if your mind needs an anchor, do your research on the power of meditation and look at all the studies around meditation.
To take it one step further, many scientists such as Einstein or Tesla, said that we are energy. So, if we are energy, and we are suffering, then we are multiplying the suffering at global scale on an energetic level.
With Covid I thought we reached the peak of suffering as a human species, but in fact it was just the beginning. Covid was like the blister that kept growing and once it burst open, all hell broke loose. We now see an eruption of wars and conflicts around the world, we see famine, we see climate disasters and floods, and fires and nature unleashing its powers upon us. In my opinion all these are the results of the collective consciousness that is suffering.
In the alternative, if the collective consciousness was filled with love, kindness, and compassion we would not see so many wars, we would not turn on our nature and destroy our natural habitat, we would not turn on ourselves with so much self-hatred.
I say self-hatred yes, because in my opinion it is a modern epidemic these days. Just look at social media and how they portray the perfect life and how people try to fit to unrealistic standards. There is no kindness in constantly trying to lose weight so you can fit in, so that your parents, friends or society not to pick on you for having gained a few pounds.
There is no kindness in constantly covering your face with tons of makeup so that you look good because you woke up tired from a long night of no sleep because the baby was crying. There is no kindness in you getting botox to look younger because you cannot accept the mortal nature of our body etc. The list goes on.
Self-hatred is the action of inflicting pain upon yourself to achieve results not because your heart asks you to, but because you are so asleep you have fallen pray to social pressure. Self-hatred is a result of disconnection from your heart and your true nature.
Kindness is acceptance and compassion.
Sure, losing weight sometimes can be good for your health but I am talking about those that set unrealistic goals for themselves or they have self-esteem issue. Sure, make up can be used just for the fun of it, but I am talking about those that use it because they want to fit in, because they are scared to be judged or picked if they look tired, those people that hide behind make up because they don’t love themselves. Botox as well can sometimes used for medical reasons, but I am talking about those that use botox as an attempt to slow down time, those that cannot accept the beauty of getting old and the beauty of each season of life.
You see, there are two sides to every coin, and my reflection is that if we are suffering so much as a society in general, then the other side of the coin must also exist.
A society of self-love, where instead of torturing ourselves with diets, we embrace our bodies with love and kindness. A reality where instead of covering our face with makeup we treasure every freckle, every wrinkle, and every skin pigmentation. A society where instead of getting botox we learn to embrace every wrinkle as a sign of wisdom. A society where instead of fighting wars we are gathering in peaceful communities to celebrate life and support one another.
Am I a dreamer, maybe I am, and I own it. We need more people to dream like me, and a world where love and compassion conquers all.
So going back to my “ivory” tower and all the noise around me…another solution to so much noise, hatred and suffering is kindness, compassion, and love.
This can only be achieved if you and I and all of us as a collective learn to accept ourselves, to love ourselves and those around us and not to judge because there are always two, three, four sides to every story.
If war is a result of our collective consciousness suffering, the way to reverse it is to pour more love and compassion into the world, to heal our collective wound, to heal our ancestral wound whether they are individual at family level or broader at society level. For example, the collective trauma of black people and minorities, the collective traumas of war survivors, the collective trauma of COVID and the list goes on.
So, my dream would be for every single one of us on this planet to look inside, find those parts of us that we hate, we hide, we are ashamed of and give them extra love and compassion. Learn how to accept those parts of ourselves that make us feel unworthy, those scars that we try to hide with fancy clothes and make up, those wrinkle we try to hide …. My dream would be for every single one of us to heal those wounds, so we don’t pass them on to the future generation.
We don’t need more politics, more rules, more laws, more protests, we need more self-awareness, self-love, compassion, kindness, patience, and non-judgement.
With loving presence,
Florina
