For a long time, I thought I knew myself pretty well, but I kept repeating the same patterns that led me to exhaustion and fatigue. Until one day it hit me, yes, I know myself, but I need to change my mindset and perspectives on life if I want the quality of my life to improve.

So I had to strike a balance between self-acceptance and making some important mindset changes.

Mindset is one of those things that can keeps you stuck in situations we don’t like, for a very long time. The moment we start shifting our mindset, we then begin to make lasting changes that allow us to break free from the cycle of exhaustion and start living a life that aligns with our soul.

Identifying the Mindset Holding You Back

For a long time I used to work like crazy, as a corporate international lawyer 50-60 hrs weeks were my bread and butter. It was my reality, and I felt like there was no way out, because that was the company structure…

At first glance, it might seem like the long hours and demanding work schedule are simply a result of the company culture. But to make real, lasting changes, I had to dig deeper. The question isn’t just “Why am I working these long hours?” — it’s “What’s driving me to keep pushing myself beyond my limits?”

Here’s where the real shift begins:

  • Boundaries and Life Choices: Often, we’re stuck in a cycle of overworking because we’ve failed to set healthy boundaries. Maybe we’ve chosen to work for a company whose values no longer align with ours. This mismatch can drain our energy, yet we stay because we don’t want to lose your financial stability, the desire to please, or simply because it’s what’s familiar. We need to examine these choices and how they impact our life.

  • Impostor Syndrome: Many people struggling with burnout also experience impostor syndrome, a belief that they’re not good enough, despite evidence to the contrary. If we’re constantly trying to prove your worth by overdelivering and saying yes to everything, we’re setting ourselves up for exhaustion. Our internal critic convinces us that we have to do more to feel validated or valued — but this only pushes us further toward burnout.

  • Limiting Beliefs and Perfectionism: If we struggle with perfectionism, we might hold ourselves to unrealistically high standards, leaving no room for error or self-compassion. This mindset drives us to overwork, obsess over details, and be harsh with ourselves when things don’t go perfectly. It’s a constant cycle of striving for an ideal that doesn’t exist, and it contributes to the stress and burnout.

  • The Impact of Personal Life: A lack of balance between personal and professional life can also be draining. If our personal life is in turmoil — whether it’s relationship issues, family concerns, or neglecting self-care — it combines with the stress from work. When we’re not taking care of your emotional needs outside of work, it’s hard to maintain the energy and focus we need to thrive professionally, and vice versa.

Bringing the Secrets to Light

I had to look myself in the mirror, be brutally honest and ask myself some really tough questions:

  • What does my soul truly crave?

  • Am I honoring my true desires, or am I living according to the expectations of others?

  • What fears or beliefs are holding me back from creating a life I truly want?

Taking responsibility means acknowledging the choices and beliefs that have kept us stuck — and understanding that we have the power to make different choices moving forward. When we become conscious of the thoughts, behaviors, and decisions that are draining us, we can begin to reframe them and adopt new, healthier beliefs that align with our true self.

The Power of Mindset in Creating Sustainable Change

Changing our mindset isn’t about overnight transformation; it’s about making small, intentional shifts that lead to long-term change. By releasing limiting beliefs and redefining our relationship with work, perfectionism, and our personal life, we can begin to reclaim our energy and joy.

With the right mindset, we can create a life that’s not driven by external pressures or fear of failure, but by a deep connection to our authentic self and what truly nourishes you.
