I wake up, eyes half shut, and reach for my phone to check the time. 10 notifications—WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, Facebook. I pick up my phone, vision still blurry, but I want to check them anyway.

One reel turns into ten. A quick email check leads to opening a news article about some politician’s brunch plans. Before I know it, 30 minutes have disappeared.

Later, on the metro, I look up. Everyone is scrolling. I sigh, pull out my phone, and join the club. Mindless scrolling, yet again.

Sound familiar?

Let’s talk digital addiction. But first—let’s connect!

Are We Addicted to Our Phones—Or Something Else?

We often say we’re “addicted to our phones,” but let’s be real: It’s not the device—it’s the apps.

Back in the day, when phones were just for calling and texting, we didn’t have them glued to our hands. The problem isn’t technology itself—it’s social media, notifications, and the endless stream of content designed to keep us hooked.

Why We Can’t Stop Scrolling

Social media apps are built to spike our dopamine levels—the same chemical linked to addiction. We:

🔹 Check our phones mindlessly—sometimes without realizing we even picked them up.

🔹 Consume content like it’s oxygen, even when it’s not adding value to our lives.

🔹Get stuck in comparison loops, influenced by the curated highlight reels of others.

🔹 Lose focus & productivity, struggling to stay present in real life.

We don’t just use social media—we are being conditioned by it.

Does Social Media Really Affect You? Let’s Test That.

If you think social media doesn’t influence you, ask yourself this:

👉 If you see a viral prank, like the Ice Bucket Challenge, over and over again, wouldn’t you at least consider trying it? Even for a second?

That’s the power of repetitive exposure. A simple idea gets planted in your brain, and suddenly, it doesn’t feel so out of reach.

Now, apply this to everything you consume online. Trends. Opinions. Beauty standards. Politics.

We are constantly being subtly manipulated—whether we realize it or not.

And then there’s the dark side:

🚩 Digital bullying & harassment

🚩 Doomscrolling negative news

🚩 Privacy concerns & hacking

🚩 Increased anxiety & loneliness

It’s not all bad—but if we don’t set limits, social media starts controlling us instead of the other way around.

So, Should We Quit Social Media Completely?

Yes and no. The choice is yours.

I personally took a one-year social media detox, and it was life-changing (more on that in another post). But quitting completely isn’t realistic for everyone.

Instead, the key is mindful usage.

For exemple, try digital detox day a week, or a couple of hours a day...

Social media isn’t evil—it’s a tool. And like any tool, it’s about how we use it. I choose to create educational content to help people grow, rather than just mindlessly consume.

If you’re feeling trapped by digital overwhelm, get in touch and let me help you set up a digital detox plan that works for you.

Final Thoughts: My ABC Rule for Digital Freedom

Next time you reach for your phone, remember:

🔹 A – Awareness: Notice your scrolling habits.

🔹 B – Bravery: Take small steps to break the cycle.

🔹 C – Compassion: Change takes time—be kind to yourself.
